Early Life
Alphonse Gabriel Capone was born January 17, 1899 in Brooklyn, New York. Capone became involved with gang-related activity at a young age, and was a member of two gangs during his youth. At fourteen he dropped out of school and worked as a candy store clerk, a pin boy at a bowling alley, and a cutter in a book bindery before joining the Five Points crime syndicate. Initially he worked as a bouncer and bartender at a bar owned by the gang. After inadvertently insulting a woman while working the door at a Brooklyn nightclub, Capone was attacked by her brother, Frank Gallucio, and his face was slashed three times on the left side, resulting in his nickname "Scarface". Capone apologized to Gallucio, and later hired him as a bodyguard.
In 1918 Al Capone met Mae Josephine Coughlin. Later that year she gave birth to their first son, Albert Francis Capone, and soon after that Alphonse and Mae married.
